Azerbaijan: Environmental activists block Stepanakert-Goris Highway near Shusha Dec. 12

Environmental activists are holding a protest on the Lachin-Xankendi Highway (also known as the Goris-Stepanakert Highway) near Shusha on Dec. 12, forcing its closure. Organizers are denouncing the alleged illegal exploitation of gold and copper deposits in areas patrolled by the Russian peacekeeping force in Nagorno-Karabakh. Additional Russian peacekeepers have been deployed to the area.

Fresh protests may occur in the coming weeks if peacekeeping authorities fail to create conditions for the Azerbaijani government to monitor mining activity within areas of Nagorno-Karabakh outside Baku's direct control. Demonstrations typically occur on the aforementioned highway. Increased security and localized transport disruptions will likely persist through at least the early afternoon. Violence is not anticipated.
