Various opposition parties to stage sit-in protests across Bangladesh Jan. 11. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Various opposition parties will stage sit-in protests across Bangladesh Jan. 11 to demand multiple concessions, including the resignation of the current administration led by the Awami League (AL). The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold sit-in demonstrations at all divisional party headquarters; in Dhaka, activists will gather at the Naya Paltan office 10:00-14:00.

The Ganatantra Mancha, an alliance of seven political parties, will stage a sit-in protest at the National Press Club in Dhaka 11:00-14:00. The organization has also vowed to hold similar demonstrations at other undisclosed locations across the country. While organizers did not immediately reveal additional details, typical rally sites include political party offices, government buildings, public squares or grounds, and major thoroughfares. While gathering sizes will vary by location, the largest turnout is likely at BNP-related events; thousands of people will probably participate in such gatherings. Activists may change venue locations on short notice if police prevent them from assembling or due to organizational-related issues.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near rally sites and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Security personnel typically resort to using force, such as tear gas and rubber bullets, to quell civil unrest. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between supporters of rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Activists may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are also possible through the evening of Jan. 11.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased risk of violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental facility. Allow additional time to travel to sites near related gatherings. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
