Dominica: General elections to occur nationwide Dec. 6

General elections to occur in Dominica Dec. 6. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Dominica will hold its general election Dec. 6. Voting will take place in polling stations, which are mainly in schools, across the country.

Security forces will likely deploy to monitor related events and safeguard election-related sites. Authorities will almost certainly implement additional security measures, including road closures, near polling stations. While election day is not a holiday, some disruptions to business and transit are likely, as citizens are entitled to two hours off work too vote. The election will likely be largely peaceful.

Context

Current Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit called this snap election on Nov. 6. A number of opposition parties, including the United Workers Party (UWP), are boycotting the election, alleging unfair electoral processes.

Advice

Avoid election-related events, and exercise caution near polling stations and counting centers. Plan on some business and transit disruptions. Heed all official security advisories. Confirm appointments.
