Heightened security is likely around State House in Georgetown in the coming hours following an attempted break-in at the site, early Dec. 15. Authorities confirmed a man violently confronted a security guard outside the building, which is the official residence of the President of Guyana. The assailant stabbed the guard five times before taking a gun from another security guard. Officials then confronted the suspect, who was injured by gunshots. The motive for the incident is unclear; however, officials have stated that the suspect wanted an audience with the president. President Irfaan Ali and his family were not injured. There is no known ongoing threat in the area.

Police continue to investigate the incident, which will likely prompt transport disruptions around State House, located along Carmichael and New Market streets.
