Event

Labor activists from the COBAS and USB Private unions plan to hold a protest march in Rome Dec. 3 to denounce the high cost of living, among other issues. Demonstrators plan to gather at Republic Square from 14:00 before marching to San Giovanni in Laterano Square. The march will proceed along Luigi Einaudi Avenue, Piazza dei Cinquecento, Cavour Street, Esquiline Street, Santa Maria Maggiore Square, Merulana Street, Manzoni Avenue, and Emanuele Filiberto Street. Organizers claim around 10,000 people would participate in the action.

Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely in central Rome through the evening of Dec. 3. Officials plan to divert multiple bus and tram services in affected areas; they may also close the San Giovanni metro station if necessary. While the demonstration will likely pass peacefully, minor skirmishes between police and protesters remain possible.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Plan for localized business and transport disruptions in central Rome through the evening of Dec. 3. Allow additional time to reach destinations and seek alternative routes to circumvent protest venues and impacted routes. Heed instructions of authorities.
