Warning

Event

Heightened security measures are likely to persist in Ma'an over the coming days after a police raid resulted in the deaths of at least three police officers and one suspected militant Dec. 19. The security operation targeted the hideout of militants suspected to be involved in the killing of a senior police officer in Ma'an during clashes between police and protesters Dec. 15. Five police officers were also wounded and eight other suspects arrested during the raid. Additional security raids are possible in Ma'an as Jordanian authorities continue to investigate the events of Dec. 15.

Further protests of varying sizes and types are likely over the coming days in several Jordanian cities as grievances over fuel prices continue. Further violence could occur, as additional confrontations between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Disruptions due to road closures and checkpoints are possible.
