Jordan: Truck drivers likely to continue to strike and stage related protests through late December /update 1

Truck drivers in Jordan likely to continue to strike and stage related protests through late December; supply chain disruptions reported.

Warning

Event

Truck drivers in Jordan affiliated with various unions and professional transport associations will likely continue to strike and stage related protests through late December. The labor action, which began in early December, is in response to a series of issues, including low wages and an increase in fuel prices. Drivers have reportedly burned tires and thrown stones at vehicles on streets and highways in Jordan; some highways have experienced temporary closures.

The US Embassy in Jordan issued a second security alert in connection with the truckers' strike Dec. 15, advising its citizens to avoid large crowds and demonstrations, citing unrest throughout the country and especially in the south. The embassy has also announced that US government personnel are prohibited from embarking on personal and official travel to Karak, Tafilah, Ma'an, and Aqaba governorates until further notice.

Some businesses in provincial cities have closed in recent days to express their solidarity with the striking truckers. Meanwhile, the transport labor action has caused severe supply chain disruptions at the Port of Aqaba, where cargo has reportedly piled up.

Supply chain disruptions are likely for the duration of the labor action. Striking drivers could stage impromptu road blockades in major cities and go-slow protests on highways, leading to further traffic disruptions. Fuel shortages are possible if tanker drivers participate in the action. Residual supply chain disruptions could persist for several days after the strike ends.

Advice

Prepare for likely ground shipping disruptions and potential fuel shortages. Allow additional time for travel in areas impacted by the labor action and check route status before setting out. Do not attempt to cross protesters' roadblocks. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
