Morocco: Air traffic controllers plan to strike nationwide Dec. 23-Jan. 6

Air traffic controllers plan to strike nationwide in Morocco Dec. 23-Jan. 6. Flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized air traffic controllers have announced plans to strike nationwide Dec. 23-Jan. 6. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce perceived government inaction and demand better salaries. While organizers have not announced any protests, striking workers could hold demonstrations at airports in conjunction with the strike.

Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely lead to significant flight disruptions; however, workers will continue to operate military, medical, and humanitarian flights. Residual disruptions to flights and airport processing operations are possible beyond Jan. 6 as officials clear the backlog of flights.

Context

In October, unionized air traffic controllers suspended a planned nationwide strike following successful negotiations with the Moroccan government.

Advice

Contact airlines to confirm flight status if booked to fly via Moroccan airports Dec. 23-Jan. 6. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive at the airport early to prevent your seat from being allocated to a standby passenger. Check local media or seek updated information from local contacts on protest activity at airports, as actions could occur unannounced.
