Tensions remain high in the area due to ethnic fighting between two tribes which began after one of the tribes accused an individual from the opposing tribe of murder and eventually killed them. According to the police, the fighting spread to the Koroba Station area but the situation is under control. Delayed reports indicate that the violence has left at least 20 people dead. Officials also added that fighting has occurred in other parts of Hela Province since October, resulting in deaths and property damage.
Authorities have deployed security personnel to Hela Province, including Koroba; an increased security presence is likely to continue in the coming weeks. Police could set up roadblocks or checkpoints to limit movement if more fighting occurs. Vandalism, arson, and gunfire remain possible at short notice.
