Event

An armed attack reportedly targeted three buses transporting workers from the Thayyem oil field in Deir Ez Zur Governorate, Dec. 30. Preliminary reports indicate that the buses were hit with explosive devices before assailants opened fire, killing at least 10 workers and wounding two others. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet; however, it is likely that Islamic State (IS) militants, active in parts of northern Syria, were responsible for the attack.

Officials will likely deploy additional security personnel in the area of the Thayyem oil field in response to the attack. Security force operations could include additional checkpoints and patrols. Further attacks may occur.

Context

On Dec. 26, IS militants attacked security posts and checkpoints near a detention center for militants in Ar-Raqqah, killing at least six security personnel from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SSDF). On Dec. 29, Syrian authorities announced a military operation, in cooperation with the international coalition, against IS militants in the region.
