Tunisia: Political parties and activists to protest and march in Tunis, Dec. 10

Activists plan to protest on Avenue Habib Bourguiba, Tunis, Tunisia, from 11:00 Dec. 10.

Warning

Event

The Front Du Salut has called on all political parties and activists to gather and march along Avenue Habib Bourguiba in Tunis from 11:00 Dec. 10. The purpose of the action is to demand President Kais Saied's resignation and protest against legislative elections perceived as unfair. Hundreds of individuals could attend the event.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the affected area through late Dec. 10. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

Since the suspension of the Tunisian Parliament on July 2021, Saied has been consolidating his hold on Tunisian institutions. Saied has modified the constitution to create a presidential system, reducing the power of the Parliament and other institutions. The move has angered most opposition parties, who have already announced their plan to boycott the legislative elections scheduled for Dec. 17.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area Dec. 10.
