Event

Environmental activists affiliated with the Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement plan to protest at multiple locations in Adelaide and its surrounding areas Jan. 13-22. Participants are denouncing the Santos Tour Down Under cycling race due to sponsorships by several fossil fuel companies. Organizers have announced the following actions:

  • St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral from 19:00 Jan. 13

  • Adelaide Town Hall from 16:30 Jan. 14

  • Patapinda Road from 10:00 Jan. 15

  • Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden from 17:30 Jan. 17

  • Soldiers Memorial Hall in Tanunda from 10:30 Jan. 18

  • Black Hill Conservation Park in Athelstone from 11:00 Jan. 20

  • Willunga Environment Centre in Willunga from 12:00 Jan. 21

  • Crafers Park N Ride in Crafers from 11:00 Jan. 22

Dozens to several hundred people could participate in each demonstration. Authorities will likely increase security near protest sites and may disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Isolated minor skirmishes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible in the immediate vicinity of protest sites.
