Ecuador: Labor activists call for nationwide protests Jan. 19
Labor activists plan protests across Ecuador Jan. 19 to press government for better social security. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Event
Activists from the United Workers Front (El Frente Unitario de Trabajadores, FUT) are planning nationwide protests Jan. 19 to denounce the government's allegedly unfair social security reforms to the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social, IESS). The main protest is planned for Caja del Seguro (IESS headquarters) in central Quito.
Protests are likely throughout the day, particularly in front of government buildings throughout Ecuador. Crowds of hundreds or thousands are likely at the Quito protest. Heightened security, as well as localized transit and business disruptions, are likely. Clashes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.
Advice
Avoid protests as a precaution. If clashes occur, take shelter in a secure, non-government building. Confirm meetings. Plan for localized transit disruptions. Comply with directives of authorities.
