Germany: Baggage and aircraft handling staff at Dusseldorf Airport to strike Jan. 27

Baggage and aircraft handling staff at Dusseldorf Airport, Germany, to strike Jan. 27; disruptions to flights and airport operations likely.

Warning

Event

The Ver.di union has called on baggage and aircraft handling staff at Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) who are employed by Aviapartner to strike Jan. 27. The purpose of the action is to denounce the planned reassignment of handling duties at the airport from Aviapartner to other companies effective April 1 and the reported requirement for current Aviapartner employees to reapply for their positions on new terms. The strike will be in effect 03:30 Jan. 27-00:30 Jan. 28. A strike-related rally is scheduled in front of the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Transport building in Dusseldorf at 10:45. Striking workers are also likely to picket outside DUS.

Unless averted, the strike will likely result in disruptions to airport operations and flight schedules at DUS. Flights will probably be canceled or delayed. Longer queues are likely for passenger processing procedures, particularly baggage check and reclaim. Disruptions could persist through Jan. 28 as the airport deals with any passenger backlog and airlines reposition aircraft and crew.

Advice

Confirm flight reservations if booked to fly via DUS Jan. 27-28. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for passenger processing. Consider alternative arrangements for critical travel.
