Haiti: Heightened security likely following shooting of Senate President in Port-au-Prince as of Jan. 9

As of Jan. 9, a heightened security presence is likely to remain in place in Port-au-Prince following the shooting of Senate President Joseph Lambert. The incident reportedly took place near the Bicentennial Monument in the capital, not far from the parliament building, on Jan. 8. Lambert was hospitalized following the incident with non-life-threatening injuries. Information on those responsible for the shooting, as well as their motive, remains unclear.

Additional attacks against key political figures in Port-au-Prince are possible. Disruptions to traffic and business activities are possible in central Port-au-Prince as authorities investigate the incident attempt to increase security around key buildings. Demonstrations in response to the attack are also possible. The threat of violence remains elevated at all public gatherings.
