Event
Authorities have increased security measures at a nickel smelter factory in North Morawali Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, as of Jan. 18 following a riot that killed two workers. Clashes broke out between workers from PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) and security personnel during a demonstration calling for better pay and workplace conditions Jan. 16. Protesters reportedly set fire to company vehicles and damaged dormitory rooms. Officials temporarily suspended operations at the smelter and detained at least 71 individuals.
The increased security measures could include setting up checkpoints and security cordons in the vicinity of the factory over the coming days. Further demonstrations by workers may occur if their demands are not met. Clashes are possible if police forcibly disperse any gathering, or if protesters attempt to break through security barriers.
The incident site is approximately 100 km (62 miles) southeast of Poso.
