A magnitude-5.3 offshore earthquake occurred near Halmahera at around 04:15 WIT Jan. 29. The epicenter was about 33 km (21 miles) northeast of Tobelo, Indonesia. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 146 km (90 miles), and light shaking may have been felt in areas near the epicenter. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely.
