Anti-government activists to stage protests in Tel Aviv, Israel, late Jan. 21; related rallies possible in other cities across country.

Warning

Event

Activists are planning to stage anti-government protests in Tel Aviv late Jan. 21. Protest organizers allege that the new governing coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to undermine the country's judiciary and democracy. Demonstrators will reportedly gather at Habima Square and the intersection of Eliezer Kaplan Street and Menachem Begin Road at 19:00; the protesters will likely march on nearby thoroughfares. Tens of thousands of people are likely to participate in the demonstrations. Political opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid has signaled his intention to attend the events.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely in protest-affected areas. Clashes between protesters and police have been reported at previous anti-government rallies and remain possible during the Jan. 21 events. Additionally, clashes between anti-government activists and Netanyahu supporters cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible in cities nationwide Jan. 21; protest organizers have called on activists to gather in other cities across the country in recent days, including Jerusalem, Haifa, Be'er Sheva, and Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut.

Advice

Avoid all announced or spontaneous protest actions due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near protest locations; if violence breaks out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations. Plan for increased security and disruptions to transport and business near demonstrations. Follow all instructions issued by local authorities.
