Authorities to increase security during annual Sinulog festival events in Cebu Province, Philippines, through Jan. 15. Exercise caution.
Event
Authorities will increase security measures during the annual Sinulog festival in Cebu Province through Jan. 15. Main event venues include Basilica del Santo Nino, Fuente Osmena Circle, Osmena Boulevard, and Plaza Independencia in Cebu City. Security personnel plan to temporarily restrict telecommunication services during several official festival gatherings. On Jan. 14, telecommunication restrictions will occur during the Fluvial Procession in Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Madaue cities 04:00-10:00 and during the Solemn Procession in the downtown and uptown areas of Cebu City 12:00-20:00. On Jan. 15, similar restrictions will be in place during the Sinulog Grand Parade event between the downtown area and South Road Properties in Cebu City 05:00-19:00. Additional gatherings and related restrictions may occur at other locations across the province.
Authorities will maintain a heightened security posture near event sites as a precaution. Officials have also prohibited alcohol sales near several official gatherings; private business establishments are exempt. The events are likely to prompt associated localized transport and business disruptions through at least Jan. 15. Increased petty crime is typically an issue during large-scale events.

The festival is also known as Santo Nino Festival in some cities, and official week-long celebratory events occur in the lead-up to the third Sunday. While the festival's hallmark is a grand parade in Cebu City, other events in preceding years have typically included concerts involving celebrities and school groups, dances, pageants, competitions, and street parties.
