Tunisia: Activists call for anti-government protests nationwide, Jan. 14
Activists call for protests against President Kais Saied across Tunisia, Jan. 14. Increased security likely; avoid all protests.
Event
Demonstrations and large political gatherings remain likely in Tunisia during the country's Revolution Day on Jan. 14. Several political parties have announced plans for demonstrations across the country. The National Salvation Front has called on its followers to gather on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis to protest against the government and its policies. The protest will almost certainly be well attended.
Heightened security measures and disruptions to transport and business are likely in areas subject to high levels of protest activity. Clashes may accompany related demonstrations and are particularly likely between supporters of rival political groups and if police attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Popular protest sites in Tunisia include public squares, city centers, and government buildings; anti-government protests in Tunis are likely to materialize near the country's Parliament building, Habib Bourguiba Avenue, and Municipal Theatre, among other prominent locations. Security forces will likely erect roadblocks and may close roads around planned protest sites to prevent demonstrators from gathering.
Context
Jan. 14 is a significant date in Tunisia's political history as it coincides with the resignation of former President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali from office. On Dec. 17, 2010, demonstrations in Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia evolved into a national uprising against alleged corruption, poverty, unemployment, and political repression. Tunisia has since gone through multiple governments, which have failed to address the country's growing unemployment and to undertake serious political and economic reforms.
Saied, who was elected in 2019, dissolved Tunisia's Parliament, suspended the country's constitution, and removed the prime minister on July 25, 2021. He ruled by decree until December 17, when the country held legislative elections. Saied, having pledged to bring about reforms and rid the country of alleged institutional corruption, has failed to achieve his intended goals. Meanwhile, the country’s socioeconomic conditions have worsened during his tenure, especially since the emergence of COVID-19.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely protest venues. Monitor local media for protest activity, as organizers may not announce events in advance. Confirm the availability of transport on protest days, as rail and traffic disruptions are possible, and allow additional time to reach destinations. Follow all police instructions. Do not attempt to photograph or otherwise record demonstrations. Immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building if violence erupts.
