Zimbabwe: Teachers' union to go on indefinite nationwide strike over wage dispute from Jan. 9

Teachers' union in Zimbabwe to go on indefinite nationwide over wage dispute from Jan. 9. School closures likely; possible protests.

Informational

Event

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) will reportedly embark on an indefinite nationwide strike when schools reopen on Jan. 9. They are demanding a 110-percent increase in wages, similar to those they received in 2018, to compensate for the higher cost of living. The ARTUZ reportedly represents 99 percent of Zimbabwe's 50,000 teachers.

Disruptions to public schools are likely. Other public or private sector labor unions could also participate in the strike. The ARTUZ could also organize localized protests, especially near government buildings in major cities including Harare. Should protests materialize, police will almost certainly deploy to monitor all gatherings. Officials are also likely to close road routes near protest sites ahead of and during demonstrations. Clashes are possible if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of local officials. Plan for increased teachers' absenteeism. Reconfirm the status of road routes before travel, particularly if traveling in or near possible protest areas.
