Belarus-Lithuania: Lithuanian government ends border control agreement with Belarus, Feb. 16

Lithuanian government ends border control agreement with Belarus, Feb. 16. Increased security, delays likely at crossings.

Informational

Event

The Lithuanian government ended a border control agreement with Belarus, Feb. 16. The decision will end formal cooperation between border and customs staff of the two countries. Rail crossings will also be affected. Lithuanian authorities will close the Stasilai (Benyakoni in Belarus) checkpoint in order to install increased measures to check for contraband; the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The end of formal cooperation will likely lead to increased security and delays at border crossings. The closing of the rail crossing at Stasilai will likely impact rail travel: passengers will face reduced choice of routes and likely increased delays.

Context

In December 2022, the Lithuanian government extended its state of emergency in regions along the Belarus border until at least March, due to the security implications of the Ukraine conflict.

Advice

Follow local travel and security advice. Confirm entry and exit requirements for travel between Belarus and Lithuania. Ensure all documentation is prepared before travel. Allow extra time for border crossings. Confirm rail travel arrangements.
