Authorities implemented heightened security measures in Panki, Jharkhand State, on Feb. 15 in response to clashes over the installation of a temporary gate along a major thoroughfare; violence left at least six people injured. Reports indicate incidents of stone pelting and arson have occurred. Officials have imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code until further notice. Under Section 144, public gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, as are the possession and use of fireworks.

Officials have deployed around 100 security personnel as a precaution. Security personnel have reportedly suspended internet services in the affected town. Authorities could order the use of additional measures, such as checkpoints, curfews, and restrictions on telecommunications, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Security measures may prompt associated localized transport or business disruptions. Additional clashes are possible over the coming days.

Panki is located approximately 114 km (71 miles) northwest of Ranchi.
