India: Village leaders to stage protests in Haryana State beginning Feb. 7

Village leaders to hold protests in Haryana State, India, from Feb. 7. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Village leaders (sarpanch) plan to protest in Haryana State beginning Feb. 7 to demand several concessions and denounce the Right to Recall Act. On Feb. 7, activists will demonstrate outside the residences of 58 ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) state legislative members and independent legislators perceived to be supporting the state government. Organizers have threatened to hold statewide tractor marches, surround (gherao) the Haryana state assembly building, and a protest march toward the parliament if their demands remain unmet.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor the gatherings and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds; officials may also conduct mass arrests. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely until the action ends. Localized business disruptions are possible near gathering venues.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
