Activists broke into the National Assembly building in Paramaribo Feb. 17, following a planned demonstration to denounce the government policies and the rising cost of living in the country. Reports indicate demonstrators have also attacked private businesses and other public buildings, and police have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets around Independence Square. There is also damage inside the National Assembly.

A large security response is ongoing, and clashes will likely continue around the government buildings in the coming hours. Significant transport and business disruptions in the area are likely until at least late Feb. 17.
