Warning

Event

Authorities are conducting a controlled release of vinyl chloride, a deadly chemical that can explode, in East Palestine, Ohio, late Feb. 6, following the train derailment that occurred on Feb. 3. Authorities have now ordered that those within a one-mile-by-two-mile radius evacuate immediately due to risk of death or severe injury. The evacuation order now includes Beaver County, Pennsylvania residents, as the plume of smoke has begun to enter the area.

The emergency response and related security measures will probably continue near the incident site into late Feb. 7. Transport and business disruptions are likely in the area until authorities give the all-clear.

East Palestine is located 32 km (20 miles) southeast of Youngstown.

Advice

Strictly follow the instructions of authorities. Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the incident site. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the affected area. Consider remaining indoors due to heavy smoke, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
