Authorities have expanded a shelter-in-place order and are maintaining the closure of Interstate 10 between Rita Road and Kolb Road in southeastern Tucson, Arizona, as of Feb. 15 after a truck overturned and spilled a load of hazardous nitric acid in the area on the afternoon of Feb. 14. The shelter-in-place order now applies to areas within a 4.8-km (3-mile) radius around the incident site. Additionally, authorities have advised people within the shelter-in-place area to turn off heaters and air conditioners that bring in outside air until the situation is resolved. Multiple nearby schools have canceled classes Feb. 15.

Significant transport disruptions are likely in the area until at least late Feb. 15; some disruptions are likely to continue into Feb. 16. Authorities could expand the shelter-in-place order on short notice.

Avoid the affected area. Remain indoors with your doors and windows closed if near the spill location. Plan for delays if operating near the incident site in Tucson. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
