A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred in northeastern Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu, at around 16:37 Feb. 16. The epicenter was about 7 km (4 miles) southwest of Port-Olry. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 36 km (22 miles), and moderate shaking was probably felt near the epicenter with light shaking probably felt throughout much of northern and central Vanuatu. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. Minor damage to rudimentary infrastructure is possible near the epicenter of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
