China: Increased security possible in Tibetan-populated areas through March 14 due to sensitive anniversaries
Increased security possible in Tibetan-populated areas of China through March 14 due to sensitive anniversaries. Protests possible.
Event
Increased security measures are possible in predominately ethnic Tibetan parts of western China through March 14, ahead of sensitive anniversaries. March 10 is the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising. The date also coincides with the beginning of several days of unrest in 2008 that culminated in anti-China rioting in Tibetan-populated areas of western China.
Officials could deploy heightened security measures in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and Tibetan-populated areas of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, and Yunnan, especially near potential protest sites such as monasteries and government buildings. Authorities could ban public gatherings, limit access to Tibetan-populated regions, and block social messaging networks and telecom services in the region. Localized clashes are possible during protests.
Advice
Avoid all protests, and stay away from government buildings, and other likely protest sites as a precaution. Prepare for potential security and transport disruptions. Allow additional time for travel due to increased security screenings and possible roadblocks or checkpoints. Do not publicly criticize the government or discuss the political status of Tibet or security developments in Tibetan-populated areas. Carry proper identification at all times and heed all instructions from security personnel. Confirm itineraries if planning to travel to the Tibet Autonomous Region; make alternative arrangements if necessary.
