Airport staff at Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover airports, Germany, to strike March 13; processing delays, flight disruptions likely.

Critical

Event

Airport workers represented by the Ver.di labor union plan to strike at several airports March 13 to demand increased pay and improved working conditions. Work stoppages will take place at:

  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

  • Bremen Airport (BRE)

  • Hamburg Airport (HAM)

  • Hanover Airport (HAJ)

The strike will likely lead to processing delays and flight disruptions, including cancelations, at the affected airports. Airport authorities at BER stated that all departures will be canceled there March 13, while Ver.di spokespersons stated that all services at BRE and HAJ may be canceled; similar disruptions are possible at HAM.

A related demonstration is planned at Willy-Brandt-Platz, in front of BER, from 08:00; organizers estimate that up to 300 people will participate in the protest.

Disruptions could persist after the strike concludes as carriers work to reposition aircraft. All related demonstrations will likely remain peaceful.

Advice

Confirm flight status before setting out for affected airports March 13. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time to clear passenger processing and airport security procedures.
