Germany: Authorities plan to dispose of WWII-era bomb in Hanau March 12

Authorities plan to dispose of a WWII-era bomb in Hanau, Germany, on March 12.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Hanau plan to commence an operation to dispose of a WWII-era bomb from 09:00 March 12. Police have issued evacuation orders for a safe area to be established within a 1 km (0.62 miles) radius around the affected site in the Teichweg area from 09:00 March 12. Officials will suspend traffic and public transport services in the area, including trains between Frankfurt and Hanau. Parts of the Kinzigbrucke Highway (federal highway 45) will also be closed.

While authorities will likely seek to remove the device for safe disposal off-site, a loud detonation will be heard throughout the city should authorities decide to conduct a controlled detonation. Heightened security and localized business and transport disruptions are likely during the operation.

Advice

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before travel; plan alternative routes if necessary. Heed instructions of authorities.
