Climate activists to protest in Berlin and Munich, Germany, May 4. Increased security; localized business, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to protest in Berlin and Munich on May 4 to denounce EU fossil fuel subsidies. Participants will assemble in Berlin at Invalidenpark at 11:00 to begin a cycling demonstration and arrive at S-Bahn station Treptower Park at 12:00 for a final rally. In Munich, protesters will gather at Max-Jospeh-Platz at 13:00 for a cycling demonstration and arrive at Ludwigstrasse at 14:00 for a rally.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near the rally locations and along major thoroughfares to prevent protesters from blocking traffic. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between XR activists, police, and frustrated motorists are possible.

Avoid all rally locations during the afternoon of May 4. Check on the latest road conditions before travel and seek alternative routes to circumvent impacted areas. Heed instructions from authorities.
