Commemorative gathering and protest activity reported in Magdeburg, Germany, late Dec. 21 in connection with Dec. 20 vehicle-ramming attack.
A commemorative gathering and protest activity have been reported in central Magdeburg late Dec. 21 in connection with the Dec. 20 vehicle-ramming attack at the city's Christmas market that killed at least five people and wounded more than 200 others. Some 1,000 people have reportedly gathered on the Domplatz for a vigil, while hundreds of others have assembled in the vicinity of Hasselbachplatz for an anti-immigration protest march. The intended route and destination of the march were not immediately clear. Police have deployed to facilitate the march, and transport disruptions have been reported. Counterprotests may materialize on short notice.
Authorities may close local roads to facilitate the demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police officers, or between ideologically opposed individuals, cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the demonstrations as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected areas and any related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
