A major police operation is continuing in central Magdeburg as of late Dec. 20 in response to a vehicle ramming incident at the Christmas market. The incident occurred at about 19:04 when a male suspect drove his car at high speed into the crowded market. Authorities are handling the incident as an intentional attack.; the perpetrator was detained immediately after the ramming.

According to city officials, at least two people died in the incident and 68 others were wounded, 15 of whom received serious injuries. Casualty figures will probably rise as responders complete their work. The Magdeburg Police Department is advising the public to remain in or return to their homes in order to facilitate their security operations.

Significant disruptions will likely continue in central Magdeburg through at least early Dec. 21. Heightened security will almost certainly remain deployed throughout the city, and possibly near sensitive site in other cities across Germany until it becomes clear that no further such incidents are imminent.

Avoid the area until police give the all-clear; strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Allow significant extra time to reach destinations in central Magdeburg into at least the morning hours of Dec. 21. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped and questioned by law enforcement personnel.
