Police continue to respond to vehicle ramming incident at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, Dec. 20. Multiple casualties reported.
A large police operation is continue in downtown Magdeburg following a vehicle ramming incident at the Christmas market near the city's town hall the evening of Dec. 20. There have as yet been no official casualty figure released; however, unconfirmed reports indicate there have been at least 20 persons injured and a high potential for several fatalities. Authorities are investigating the incident as an intentional attack. The suspect was detained immediately after the ramming.
Significant disruptions will likely continue in central Magdeburg through at least early Dec. 21. Heightened security will almost certainly remain deployed throughout the city, and possibly near sensitive site in other cities across Germany until it becomes clear that no further such incidents are imminent.
Avoid the area until police give the all-clear. Allow significant extra time to reach destinations in central Magdeburg into at least the morning hours of Dec. 21. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped and questioned by law enforcement personnel.
