Indian National Congress party announces plan to hold rallies across India through April 30. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Indian National Congress (INC) party has announced plans to hold nationwide protests through April 30 to denounce the recent disqualification of INC leader Rahul Gandhi from parliament, among other issues. On April 1, INC supporters plan to hold rallies at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi statues in every state capital. From April 3, organizers will commence the Jai Bharat Satyagraha political campaign to mobilize grassroots-level support; INC supporters are likely to hold demonstrations of varying types.

Additionally, activists will hold events at various district headquarters and surround (gherao) district collectorate offices nationwide April 15-20; senior party leaders plan to address several events. INC supporters will also protest at the state level April 20-30. While organizers did not announce additional assembly points, typical gathering sites include prominent local government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Previous well-attended rallies have attracted thousands of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between INC activists and rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
