Kenya: Opposition protests likely nationwide through at least March 20

Opposition protests are likely nationwide in Kenya through at least March 20. Major demonstration planned in Nairobi, March 20.

Warning

Event

Opposition protests and associated heightened security are likely nationwide through at least March 20. Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition, has called for mass protests culminating in a demonstration in Nairobi on March 20. The action is in response to the government's failure to address their concerns within the 14 days ultimatum issued on Feb. 22, which includes an increase in the cost of living and a demand that President William Ruto resign. Although organizers have not immediately announced protest sites, related gatherings will most likely be near government buildings, stadiums, prominent squares in city centers, and along major thoroughfares. Ahead of the Nairobi protest, Odinga's supporters held a demonstration in Kisumu on March 10; further protests are likely, including in the Mombasa, Isiolo, Garissa, Kiambu, Kisii, Kakamega, and Turkana counties. Gatherings are likely to be large in most areas.

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to monitor all protest sites and may attempt to break up disruptive gatherings. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near protest sites. President Ruto's supporters may try to hold counterprotests near demonstration sites. Clashes between opposing groups of activists or between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Plan for delays near gathering areas.
