The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed that four US citizens were kidnapped in Matamoros, Tamaulipas State, Mexico, March 3. The individuals were crossing the border from Brownsville, Texas, US, to Matamoros in a white minivan when criminals opened fire on their vehicle. Officials believe the victims were forced to enter another vehicle and were abducted by criminals. Authorities are offering a USD 50,000 reward for information regarding the case. Authorities have not confirmed if they received a ransom demand.

There is a significant threat of kidnapping in Mexico. The threat extends to both foreigners and locals; however, locals are more likely to be targeted. The most common types of abduction in Mexico include basic opportunistic kidnap-for-ransom, express kidnapping, and virtual kidnapping. Criminal organizations have infiltrated police forces in certain areas, and some officers are complicit in kidnappings. For this reason, many kidnappings go unreported for fear of retaliatory attacks.
