Context

Mexico has been experiencing high levels of violence, including shootings and kidnappings, in recent months involving drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs). Guanajuato state has been particularly affected by such violence, with ongoing turf wars between DTOs, including the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, New Generation Jalisco Cartel (Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, CJNG) and La Nueva Familia Michoacana. The March 11 shooting incident was likely DTO-involved.
