Mozambique: Nationwide demonstrations expected in memory of late anti-government artist March 18
Nationwide demonstrations expected in Mozambique in memory of late anti-government artist March 18. Possible increased security.
Event
Nationwide demonstrations are expected in Mozambique to commemorate the recent passing of anti-government musician Edson "Azagaia" da Luz March 18. The rapper, who died after an epileptic seizure on March 9, was famous for openly criticizing the regime in his songs. Previous demonstrations on his funeral day on March 15 saw mourners chant anti-government slogans and police disperse protesters with tear gas. Marches are possible in all provinces, including in Cabo Delgado, where security forces have reportedly refused to authorize commemorations. The following protest locations have been announced:
Beira: from the Munhava stoplights to the 3 de Fevereiro plaza from 07:00
Inhambane: from the water fountain to the Marinha plaza from 08:30
Lichinga: from the Rua do Mercado Central to the Liberdade plaza, from 08:30
Maputo: from Eduardo Mondlane plaza to Praça da Independência from 08:30
Montepuez: from Campo da Plexus from 08:00
Increased security is likely near marches, especially in Cabo Delgado. Should they occur, authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters are police are possible. Demonstrations and related security force operations could result in ground travel disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions near protest sites. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on the status of public transport. Allow additional travel time near protests.
