Pakistan: Protests denouncing gas supply shortages possible in Karachi, Sindh Province, into early April

Protests denouncing gas supply shortages possible in Karachi, Pakistan, into early April. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Protests are possible in Karachi into at least early April in reaction to continuing supply shortages by utility provider Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). Residents complain that the situation is particularly difficult since the lack of gas limits their ability to prepare their pre-dawn (Suhour) and post-sunset (Iftar) meals during Ramadan. Previous demonstrations over the gas shortage have taken place near SSGC offices, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. The most recent gatherings, however, have been somewhat small, attracting only a few dozen participants.

Authorities will likely increase security near gathering sites and move to disperse any demonstrations that become overly disruptive. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated commercial disruptions are possible.

Advice

As a standard precaution, avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for possible localized business and travel disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
