Pakistan: Security heightened near court buildings in Islamabad March 27 due to high-profile hearing

Officials boost security near court buildings in Islamabad, Pakistan, March 27, due to high-profile hearings. Gathering ban continues.

Warning

Event

Authorities are heightening security near the Islamabad High Court and Federal Judicial Complex buildings in Islamabad, March 27. The move is in response to scheduled court hearings and investigations involving Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Rules under Section 144 are ongoing in Islamabad; these ban unauthorized public gatherings of more than five people, the possession and use of personal firearms, among others. PTI supporters are likely to defy Section 144 restrictions to hold rallies. Violence may quickly break out, especially if officials issue arrest warrants for Khan, or police attempt to prevent PTI supporters from gathering.

Traffic restrictions, including road closures and diversions are likely in the vicinity of court buildings, sensitive areas like the Red Zone, as well as entry points to Islamabad. Additional measures, such as vehicular and pedestrian checks, are possible. Activists may hold violent and disruptive protests if Khan is arrested or receives unfavorable court orders; popular protest venues include public parks, government buildings like the parliament, and major roadways. Clashes and/or tight security measures may prompt further localized transport and/or business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid any protests or navigating protester roadblocks due to possible violence. Exercise caution if operating in or near any court premises in Islamabad. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Monito trusted local media for protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
