A magnitude-5.7 oearthquake occurred in eastern East Sepik Province at around 10:17 PGT March 23. The epicenter was approximately 44 km (27 miles) south-southeast of Angoram. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 132 km (82 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt in East Sepik, Madang, Southern Highlands, Western Highlands, Enga, and Chimbu provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
