A magnitude-6.5 offshore earthquake occurred in the Bismarck Sea north of West New Britain Province at around 15:36 March 1. The epicenter was about 108 km (67 miles) northwest of Kimbe. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 599 km (67 miles), and weak shaking was probably felt throughout West New Britain Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely.
