A magnitude-6.1 offshore earthquake occurred south of the Solomon Islands' Santa Isabel Island at around 09:19 SBT March 28. The epicenter was about 73 km (45 miles) west of Buala, Solomon Islands. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 86 km (53 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in parts of the country. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
