US: Protests are likely in Atlanta, Ga., through mid-March in response to planned construction of police training facility

Protests likely in Atlanta, Ga., US through mid-March against planned police training facility. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Further protests by the Stop Cop City Solidarity are likely in Atlanta, Georgia, through at least mid-March in response to plans to build a large Atlanta Police Department (APD) training facility in the area. Demonstrations, with encamped protesters, have been planned at the construction site on Key Road in south-east Atlanta until at least March 11 and are possible in downtown Atlanta. The group has also planned a special day of demonstrations March 9.

A group of activists clashed with police late March 4 at the construction site, burning construction equipment and throwing stones, fireworks, and molotov cocktails; police arrested 35 protesters and are pressing domestic terrorism charges for at least 23.

Heightened security and localized transit disruptions are likely near the construction site and are possible in downtown Atlanta. Further clashes and vandalism are possible. Road blockades are also possible.

Context

The construction of the new APD facility has faced opposition both from protesters critical of alleged police abuses and from environmental activists. Clashes between police and demonstrators at the site on Jan. 18 led to the police-involved shooting death of one protester.

Advice

Avoid protests as a precaution. If clashes occur, vacate the area immediately. Comply with directives of authorities. Do not attempt to circumvent blockades; wait for authorities to dismantle them. Plan for localized transit disruptions.
