The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) is leading rallies in major cities nationwide April 5 over various grievances. Demands include wage hikes, a ban of hazardous working materials, and reforms to the state-run Fair Work Ombudsman. Hundreds of workers may join each event. Although demonstrations are likely to pass peacefully, increased security and traffic disruptions are likely in case of a large turnout. Announced rallies include:

  • Brisbane, Queensland : At Queens Garden, 11:00

  • Cairns, Queensland: Near the Federal Circuit and Family Court building along Grafton Street, 11:00

  • Perth, Western Australia: Outside the Forrest Chase shopping center, 11:30

  • Sydney, New south Wales: From Belmore Park along Hay Street to the Parliament building, 11:00

Additional gatherings may occur at or near government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares in cities. Security personnel will probably deploy to monitor the demonstrations. Transport disruptions may occur if activists march on or block roads; authorities may also impose road closures or traffic diversions in the vicinity of protests. Minor skirmishes may occur if participants attempt to breach security cordons or if police forcibly disperse unruly crowds.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. Plan for localized transport disruptions, especially in downtown areas. Use alternative routes to circumvent protest locations. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
