Warning

Event

Authorities are implementing heightened security measures in several parts of Sambalpur, Odisha State, through April 14 following recent clashes between two groups that left at least 10 people injured. On April 12, the violence began when unidentified assailants hurled stones at motorists leading a religious bike procession near the Bhudapara area. Reports indicate several incidents of arson and vandalism have also occurred.

Officials have imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code in the Ainthapali, Bareipali, Danupali, Khetrajpur, and Sadar police station areas until April 14. Under Section 144, public gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, as are the possession and use of fireworks.

Officials are maintaining an increased security presence in the affected areas. Authorities may extend the existing measures or impose additional restrictions, such as checkpoints and curfews, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Security measures may prompt associated localized transport and business disruptions. Related rallies and/or further clashes are possible over the coming days.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of caution if operating in or near Sambalpur. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
