India: Heightened security and mass public gatherings likely nationwide April 6 during annual Hanuman Jayanti Hindu festival commemoration

Increased security and mass public gatherings likely in India April 6 for annual Hanuman Jayanti Hindu festival; communal clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Increased security and mass public gatherings are likely across India April 6 as the nation observes the annual Hanuman Jayanti Hindu festival. While celebrations will take place throughout the country, the largest gatherings will likely occur in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal states. Holiday events are most likely near Hindu temples, with processions taking along major thoroughfares. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during the holiday period.

Additionally, several religious and civil society groups reportedly plan to stage rallies at various locations nationwide. Police have denied permits for some activist groups to hold such gatherings, including for the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) planned procession in New Delhi's Jahangirpuri area. Although organizers have not as yet announced specific assembly points, typical gathering venues include Hindu temples (mandir), as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Participation will vary by locale, though the highest turnout will likely occur near sites hosting larger official religious events.

Authorities have already increased security in certain cities in West Bengal and will probably take similar measures in other states as a precaution following a spate of communal clashes that erupted in several states during the March 30-April 1 Ram Navami festival processions. Specific security measures may include checkpoints, road closures, and restrictions on public gatherings and/or telecommunications. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Exercise caution near festival venues, places of worship, and other crowded event sites. If violence breaks out, depart immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm all business and travel appointments April 6. Be on alert for the heightened risk of petty theft and watch personal possessions closely. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
