Unidentified assailants attacked a convoy of gold miners in Arlit Department on April 9. The convoy was traveling from Tchibarakaten to Arlit. During the confrontation, at least five Nigerien soldiers were killed and five others injured. The precise location of the incident is unclear. The assailants' identity is unclear; however, given the location, Islamist militants are suspected. Tchibarakaten is located about 380 km (235 miles) northeast of Arlit.

Context

Levels of insecurity in northern Niger have increased in recent months, especially since the opening of the Tchibarakaten mining site. Reports suggest that authorities have deployed military forces to increase security patrols in the region and assist with the transport of gold.
